Materials Needed:

  1. IKEA Billy Bookcases (4 short)
  2. Wood:
    • 1″x12″x12″ poplar, pine, or oak board (for the top)
    • 1″x2″x8″ boards (for frame)
    • 1″ square dowels
  3. Tools & Supplies:
    • Power drill/driver
    • Finishing nails & wood screws
    • Jigsaw & circular saw
    • Tape measure and pencil
    • Liquid Nails, caulk, and caulk tool
    • Paint & wood stain (Minwax Special Walnut, Sherwin Williams Tree Swallow in satin)
    • Kilz Adhesion Primer
    • Polycrylic for sealing

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Assemble Bookcases

Start by assembling the 4 IKEA Billy bookcases following the included instructions.

2. Add Square Dowels to the Back

To close the gap between the bottom shelf and the wall, nail a 1″ square dowel to the back of each bookcase.

3. Find Placement on the Wall

Place the assembled bookcases against the wall, ensuring the center is aligned.

4. Anchor Sides Together

Secure the sides of the bookcases with screws at the top and bottom to form a solid unit.

5. Anchor Bookcases to the Wall

Use the provided IKEA wall anchors to attach the bookcases to the studs.

6. Build the Wood Top

Cut the 1″x12″ board to fit as the top and secure it with Liquid Nails and finishing nails. Add a 1″x2″ trim around the edges for a polished look.

7. Add Trim to the Front

Attach 1″x2″ boards along the front of the bookcase, covering seams where the bookcases meet.

8. Create the Baseboard Look

If needed, notch 1″x2″ boards to fit around the floor’s quarter-round trim, ensuring a neat finish.

9. Finish the Sides
